ABB Utilizes OPC for Control System Migration

Print
Using OPC technology for seamless integration, the 800xA control system from ABB is able to gather data from either ABB distributed control systems (DCS) or 3rd party DCS systems, and display it in the same graphical displays.

When ABB France modernized the control system for chemical manufacturer Arkema, at the Saint Menet oleochemical factory in Marseille, the solution was based on the architecture of ABB’s System 800xA, with connectivity to Arkema’s existing Honeywell TDC 3000 DCS. ABB’s AC 800 Connect product enables connectivity to five new AC 800M controllers that replace local control panels.

Utilizing ABB’s control system technology has enabled reduction of obsolete components, while a secure, remote maintenance connection ensures prompt troubleshooting and problem resolution—for substantial maintenance cost reductions.

Connectivity is achieved with the System 800xA for HSM (Honeywell System Migration), which includes the Matrikon OPC Server for Honeywell TPS, for reliable data transfer from the Honeywell controllers to the ABB System 800xA platform.  In addition, alarms and events are streamed into the 800xA system and presented transparently to the operator.

Standards-based connectivity provides the benefits of capital and operating cost savings, while using the MatrikonOPC Server for Honeywell TPS to connect the legacy equipment enables the ability to leverage existing assets. In addition, the ABB tool HSN Connect provides for stepwise evolution so the end user is able to manage the project schedule and its costs as time and budget allowed.
