Operationally, a medium voltage drive is almost indistinguishable from a low voltage drive. The differences are in the topologies used for the rectifier and for the inverter, the protection schemes used to minimize collateral damage and the sensing and monitoring the MV drive employs for the line, drive and motor. This workshop helps you understand when it makes sense to choose low or medium voltage drives.

Rick Hoadley is Principal Consulting Applications Engineer for ABB's medium voltage drives business in New Berlin, Wisconsin. He has 38 years of drives development and application experience after receiving a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. Rick is a senior member of IEEE and also teaches at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
