In the world of pulp and paper (as in many industrial settings), energy
and raw material costs have skyrocketed. The result is a need for
greater efficiency, which in turn drives a need for advanced
instrumentation and control.
Food and beverage is an industry with dramatic contrasts, from global,
highly automated giants to artisan shops on street corners, proud of
hand labor. It is fragmented: a $100 billion Nestle represents less
than 1.5 percent of the total.
Pressure is the word in the refinery industry. “It’s a squeeze. Crude costs are five times what they were five years ago,” says Fred Manley, vice president, global refining, Emerson Process Management. “Ironically, drivers grumble at gas prices that actually aren’t profitable for refiners.”

An overall trend is diversification. Emerging markets see chemical production as a means to increase employment or diversify on oil and gas resources.
Both efficiency and safety benefit from automation, so it is not surprising that the global chemical industry is one of the largest automation markets, at around $6 billion.
The chemical industry faces two ongoing challenges—dramatically rising costs of raw material and energy, and plant safety.
Emerson Process Management has announced the distinguished winners and finalists in its Smart Wireless Innovators Application Contest.
