Motor Rebates Advance
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce in May approved an amendment to create a NEMA Premium motor rebate program.
During committee work on the House of Representative’s climate change legislation, Representatives Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Mike Ross (D-Ark.) offered an amendment to incentivize the adoption of NEMA Premium energy efficiency motors, certified by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association ( www.nema.org).
The amendment, which is nearly identical to an amendment the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee adopted in April, would incentivize the purchase of NEMA Premium motors by creating a federal rebate program. This amendment approves $350 million to provide $25 per horsepower rebate for NEMA Premium motors.
With the NEMA rebate now in both the House and Senate bills, “it looks very promising” that the provision will be included in final energy legislation expected later, said a NEMA spokesperson.
