Looks like our first Packaging Automation Forum was a resounding success. About 150 machinery builders, users and technology suppliers gathered to hear 13 speakers from the industrial world talk about what they are doing to bring new success to manufacturing. The speakers left no doubt that the future belongs to such concepts and techniques as modular software, industrial networks and information sharing. Read more

Yesterday was a travel day to Chicago coupled with a visit to my office and preparations for today's first Packaging Automation Forum. Those trips are always hectic, filled with meetings and long--but yesterday was especially long. We had an opening registration/hospitality time for the Forum. Read more

Witnessed the biggest fight of my 18 year career refereeing adult men soccer yesterday. I was an assistant referee and away from much of the play so I didn't really sense that much resentment brewing. But a hard foul, retaliation and a puch thrown (all in less than 5 seconds) ignited a bench-clearing brawl. And I (having run down the touchline to intercede) found myself in the middle of the bench. Fortunately they didn't go for me, so I could step back and take numbers. Three or four guys just went berserk. It's a sobering experience. Especially when I know that I'm the referee of the next game on that pitch between two sides who don't like each other. Fortunately, I had no problems.

ISA is really starting to make some progress in its new push to position itself as a go-to place for manufacturing standards. It is welcome news. In what's billed as a "key" working meeting, working group members met April 26-28 to continue the OAGiS and ISA-95 standards convergence effort announced last winter. The purpose was to "delve into" the detailed technical work necessary to achieve this convergence of standards. Read more

The press release was interesting, but there was something slightly askew at first sight. That disjuncture was an Internet-based sales organization with a demonstration vehicle that will travel the country showing products. Read more

Gotta wonder about how the manager gave instructions. I just stopped by McDonalds for a quick sandwich after Yoga (no comments about a Yoga eating style, this is what happens when your wife has a meeting and you're all alone) and saw an employee (20s, male) dilligently sweeping at a small piece of something in the drive. Less than 5 feet away was a board laying right in the middle of the entry into the lot. He never picked it up. Saw him 10-15 minutes later in another part of the lot sweeping at small items. So, did the manager say "go sweep up the parking lot" instead of "please clean the parking lot"? How do we give instructions? Are we clear? Can we be taken literally by clueless employees?
