FOUNDATION LETTER
Certification, Collaboration, Community
Welcome to the November 2011 issue of OPConnect. As the year winds down, the OPC Foundation remains focused on three C's: Certification, Collaboration and Community.
Ten leading vendors certified OPC products in 2011 using OPC Foundation-sanctioned test labs, with many more in the pipeline (see below). Important collaboration work is driving OPC success, including a cooperation between the OPC Foundation and PLCopen (more below). And we continue to support the “OPC Community” by sponsoring events throughout the world, with several still scheduled for this year.
In mid-November, we will hold two OPC Days, designed to educate attendees on the powerful OPC UA (Unified Architecture) specification. Join us in Antwerp, Belgium, on Nov. 16, for OPC Day Benelux 2011, where the focus is on Connecting Evolvable Automation and Business Components with OPC UA. Visit www.ima-research.org/opc-event/ to register. Later that week, on Nov. 18 in Paris, we'll host OPC Day Francea unique opportunity to connect with the French-speaking OPC community...Read more

How open standards can increase OEM product sales
Increasing data visibility by using OPC Systems.NET from Open Automation Software to visualize real-time data directly from the source using popular Visual Studio
-capable graphics packages.
Customers are no longer satisfied with equipment that only communicates using proprietary technology, and can no longer afford to be locked into one vendor's product line. They need the flexibility to build quality
solutions which will enable them to utilize the best equipment/software on the market. They also want proven results that the equipment will increase production, decrease costs, and easy to integrate into existing
systems. The challenge for OEM's is how to overcome these issues and sell more products with documented stats. One solution is to use open standards to empower each device with the ability to connect to existing
systems, and the ability to visualize and share real-time data...Read More

New integrated industrial automation reporting capability requires no programming
Software Toolbox launches “Dream Report” that simplifies extracting information from almost any data source and then deliver reports automatically to anyone, anywhere.
Dream Report is a real-time reporting generator solution, developed by Ocean Data Systems. It is easy to use right out of the box and yet powerful enough to work effectively with professional databases, such as SQL
Server 2005/2008 and Oracle with no programming or database development skills. Such comprehensive functionality is due largely to the configurable end-user interface, which relies on user-friendly check-box
configuration tools. The solution combines five key functions to make it a convenient reporting solution for industrial automation: data collection; data logging; data extraction and analysis; report design; and report
generation and distribution...Read More»

New automation concepts with OPC Unified Architecture
OPC UA technology complements the traditional OPC industrial standard by adding important characteristics such as platform independence, scalability, high availability, and Internet capability. Many automation
component vendors already offer OPC UA clients or servers for their PLCs, process control systems, field devices, or operator panels. An efficient and cost-effective way to develop OPC UA products is to use OPC
development kits such as Softing's OPC UA toolkit.
OPC technology has evolved into a de-facto standard for interoperable data exchange between multi-vendor software applications that is applicable in a wide range of industries spanning from manufacturing and
process industries to building automation and many others. Today more than 20,000 OPC products from over 3,500 different manufacturers are in use all over the world. OPC facilitates the data transfer between widely
distributed parts of a plant. The OPC interfaces bridge the divide between heterogeneous automation worlds...Read More»
