No longer can the packaging area hide as a “black box” in the system.

Effective connectivity requires standards to reduce the engineering effort to make different machines, applications and systems communicate. OPC, a communication standard, is one of those technologies that many love to privately disparage but that is actually widely adopted. OPC is essentially a standard way of digitally describing information that can be sent from a device and then understood by another device or software application. The latest iteration, OPC-UA (for Unified Architecture), is built upon standard Web technologies such as eXtensible Markup Language (XML) that play well over the other industry networking standard–Ethernet... Ethernet's Role: Shades of Connectivity

Most experts agree that the technology and standards needed for comprehensive networking of packaging operations now exist, but it's in their implementation that the differences arise.

Connectivity is like motherhood: Everybody praises it in the abstract; it's the concrete examples that can spark disagreements. One thing that there is little disagreement about, though, is the central role of Ethernet.

Benefits of this single-platform, multi-function approach included fewer parts, less wiring, faster programming and maintenance time reductions. Add the enhanced communication capabilities that these newer devices possessed (capabilities more typical of a personal computer, or PC, than a PLC) and a general adherence to industry standards such as the programming languages based on the International Electrotechnical Commission's IEC 61131-3, and it seemed obvious that the PAC was a winning package indeed...
