PI Develops Energy-Saving Profile Based on PROFINET
Automotive manufacturers asked for it; PI delivers, by creating an energy-saving profile based on PROFINET that addresses the needs to reduce energy costs and manage energy use in production.
The high cost of energy, the downturn in the global economy, and the need to comply with legal regulations have created a perfect storm for manufacturers worried about energy management. While manufacturing companies have been taking stronger measures to reduce energy costs for several years, PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) is tackling energy savings head-on by defining and standardizing a manufacturer-independent energy-saving profile based on PROFINET. This issue is of special interest in meeting other manufacturing goals, such as resource preservation and reduction of production times, which can be achieved by skillfully introducing energy-saving measures... Fast Start Up for PROFINET IO
Authors Kostyantyn Shcherbina, Hilscher Gmbh, and Jens Bürger, Murrelektronik GmbH, explain why fast start up (less than 500 ms between “power on” and receipt of IO data) was critical to automobile manufacturers who chose PROFINET as their Industrial Ethernet standard.
Industrial Ethernet communication systems, with advantages such as higher data rate, vertical communication and the ability to coexist with established IT standards, have had a profound impact on the world of automation. As a flexible, robust and rapidly advancing technology, PROFINET covers all areas of automation and distinguishes itself from other Industrial Ethernet standards by its ability to replace the traditional fieldbus systems and adapt to new challenges.
Based on 20 years of successful experience with PROFIBUS, PROFINET incorporates technology that will become the common industrial communication system for the future. Easing the way is the development of the Fast Start Up (FSU) technique for PROFINET IO, which makes it possible for an IO device to go instantly from power on to cyclic data exchange with an IO controller...Read more
PROFINET Goes to Germany, Jacksonville
Carl Henning, deputy director of PTO North America, talks about what's new in PROFINET technology at Hanover Fair, Germany, and highlights the latest training class in Jacksonville, Florida.
I started this report on the plane back from Jacksonville, Florida, where we had one of our most interactive classes with more questions than ever. It was good to see some IT folks in attendance. In fact, one of them was having a firewall problem that we were able to pinpoint for him.
We always encourage viewing the archived webinars on Industrial Ethernet Basics, especially for those unfamiliar with Ethernet. This is obviously the right thing for us to encourage, as this comment reveals... Read more
