Dr. James Truchard profile

Dr. James Truchard is cofounder, president and chief executive officer of National Instruments (www.ni.com), a provider of computer- and network-based measurement and automation systems. Since 1976, Truchard has led National Instruments from its humble beginnings—literally a garage operation—to the almost $400 million global supplier it is today.

NI’s breakout software product, LabView, was developed in 1986 by Truchard and NI cofounder Jeff Kodosky. It introduced the world to virtual instrumentation, where the software is the instrument. Successive generations of software and hardware systems have leveraged commercial technologies such as personal computers, Microsoft systems, PCI bus hardware and wireless networking.

Truchard holds a doctorate in electrical engineering, as well as masters and bachelors degrees in physics, from The University of Texas at Austin. His expertise in software, hardware and networking technologies makes him uniquely qualified to address communication strategies for today’s automation and manufacturing systems.
