Between 2004 and 2007, shipments of wireless products used for on-site industrial monitoring and control applications in North America will grow by nearly 40 percent compounded annually, rising from $151 million to more than $409 million, says researcher Venture Development Corp.
(VDC), Natick, Mass. The use of IEEE 802.11a/b/g is increasing. But proprietary protocols in the 900 MHz band accounted for the largest share of shipments in 2004, at 33.6 percent, and will maintain that lead at 31.6 percent in 2007. Despite high interest in ZigBee and 802.15.4 mesh networking, this technology will have trouble gaining traction in the industrial market, VDC believes. The firm sees wireless mesh networking products accounting for just $25 million in North American shipments by 2007, up from $6 million last year.
