The Role of Open-Source Software in Robotic Integration

Feb. 20, 2024
Fredrik Ryden discusses the evolving landscape of industrial robot integration and the key innovations benefiting automation engineers.

Olis Robotics has successfully deployed its remote monitoring and controls software in various applications, ranging from palletizing cells to handling radioactive samples. Control Design recently spoke to Fredrik Ryden, CEO of Olis Robotics, about the advancements and challenges in robotic integration for industrial applications.

Ryden emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring in enhancing deployment speed and operational efficiency across various applications, from palletizing to handling radioactive samples. He highlights the trend towards non-real-time communication on the plant floor, simplifying software and hardware interfaces and leveraging standard PC hardware with open protocols like ReST APIs, which facilitates interoperability and access to a broader ecosystem of software tools and support.

Ryden also discusses the evolution of collaborative robots (cobots) and their role in democratizing industrial automation by lowering barriers to adoption, particularly for companies lacking prior robotics experience. While cobots offer intuitive programming methods like hand-guiding, they have limitations in speed and payload, especially in high-volume production environments.

Despite advancements in integration and installation, Ryden acknowledges the need for simpler operation and suggests remote monitoring and AI-assisted solutions as potential avenues to achieve true plug-and-play functionality in the future.
