Single Board Computer

March 4, 2011
GE Intelligent Platforms today announced two new rugged single board computers based on 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 ‘Sandy Bridge’ processors.

The XCR14 6U CompactPCI® and XVR14 6U VME platforms join the previously-announced SBC324 3U VPX and SBC624 6U VPX single board computers, reinforcing GE’s commitment to bringing the most advanced processor technology and leading edge performance to its customers.

Both the XCR14 and XVR 14 provide a choice of either dual- or quad-core 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 processors operating at up to 2.5GHz, offering a range of four performance/watt options, and up to 16GBytes of soldered DDR3 SDRAM with ECC. This, together with a sophisticated inbuilt graphics capability and Intel’s AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions) technology, makes them ideal for challenging applications in industry and telecommunications and especially for defense and aerospace applications beyond command and control such as signal processing in intelligence/surveillance/ reconnaissance (ISR) and radar/sonar. Both single board computers benefit from GE’s extensive ecosystem of CompactPCI and VME hardware and software, easing the development and integration of complete systems, as well as from GE’s industry-leading experience in long term program support through its product lifecycle management (PLM) services.

"This latest announcement broadens the number of embedded computing architectures that can take advantage of the unprecedented performance of Intel’s latest processors," said Rob McKeel, President, Military & Aerospace, GE Intelligent Platforms. "Now, whether a customer is committed to OpenVPX, VME or CompactPCI, GE is able to offer a solution that is rugged, flexible and that provides the opportunity to reduce overall system size by putting more capability into a single slot."

For existing customers, these two new embedded computing platforms – together with those announced previously - provide an optimum upgrade path/technology insertion opportunity, in line with GE’s long term commitment to maximizing the value of customer investments. The XCR14 and XVR14 are pin-compatible with their predecessors, the CR12 and VR12.

Both platforms are available in five build levels, including air- and conduction cooled.

In addition to a comprehensive range of onboard I/O features including four Gigabit Ethernet ports, five USB 2.0 ports, two DVI ports, VGA, audio and two COM ports, the XCR14 and XVR14 also offer two on-board mezzanine expansion sites (both PCI-X PMC/PCI Express® XMC) capable for enhanced system flexibility. SATA ports are also supported.

A rich software choice is planned for the two single board computers, including comprehensive Deployed Test Software (BIT and BCS) plus operating system support for Windows® 7, Open Linux®, Wind River Linux and VxWorks®.
