Messaging Modules Aid Communication

Messaging modules simplify configuration of data exchange among programmable devices and databases without programming.

Online Development Inc. continues to release messaging modules for Rockwell Automation's ControlLogix platform. The eATM tManager EI module enables connection of plant floor data with enterprise and plant-wide systems via Java Messaging Services (JMS) connection technologies. As an information appliance, the eATM tManager EI module simplifies configuration of data exchanges and involves no programming.

The module is a self-contained hardware and software system that is available with various adapters to facilitate bidirectional data exchange. These include:

  • Messaging Adapters for: IBM WAS JMS, Red Hat JBoss JMS, JBoss Community JMS and IBM WMQ
  • Communications Adapters for: TCP/IP Sockets, UDP Sockets, FTP and email (SMTP and POP3)
  • Message Formats: XMLand ASCII, Fixed-Length and Comma Delimited
  • Automation Adapters for: Rockwell Automation CIP via ControlLogix backplane, Rockwell Automation CIP via EtherNet/IP, Siemens Industrial Ethernet and Modbus TCP

Software is included to configure data transfer and security parameters. For data transfer, the utility uses intuitive screens and drop down menus to select data and establish conditions for triggers such as specific values, time and other characteristics. It also configures the module’s store and forward feature. If data is interrupted between the controller and the computer system, it is stored in the module and then forwarded when the connection is resumed. The setup utility also can configure a failover feature that transmits any data lost due to interrupted communications to a defined failover destination.

A second new appliance transaction module connects dissimilar factory floor controllers and devices to Rockwell Automation controllers. The cATM Universal Gateway is a self-contained module for Rockwell Automation ControlLogix PACs that includes hardware, software and over 100 drivers for various controllers, devices and protocols. All drivers are supplied with the module at no additional charge. It eliminates the need for custom programmed data bridges and is supplied with a setup utility that uses intuitive screens and drag-and-drop operation to configure data transactions between controllers. A complete list of drivers for the cATM Universal Gateway is available on the company’s web site.

The third new product from OLDI, cATM-BLY90 appliance transaction modules make it easier to migrate legacy ABB Bailey Infi 90 or Network 90 DCS (Distributed Control System) to ControlLogix PACs from Rockwell Automation. The cATM-BLY90 enables phased migration of ABB Bailey DCS consoles. Once Bailey Infi 90 or Network 90 system data is available within a ControlLogix PAC, Rockwell Automation applications such as FactoryTalk View SE can be used for visualization of the data, alarming, and other functions. cATM-BLY90 modules do not require any hardware or software changes to installed ABB Bailey Infi 90 or Network 90 DCS. These modules support all existing DCS block functions including exception reporting, supervisory control and system status monitoring. Each module is capable of processing up to 5,000 blocks of data. The cATM-BLY90 connects to the Bailey system through an ABB Bailey CIU interface.
