"The starting point for ODVA's energy initiative is to ensure the energy data can be seen throughout the production domain in order to empower industrial consumers with the energy information they need to solve their energy consumption and efficiency problems in a holistic manner," said Katherine Voss, ODVA executive director.
ODVA, formerly known as the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association, is the Ann Arbor, Mich., vendor-based association that supports network technologies based on the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP). As the first action in its energy initiative, ODVA has formed a special interest group (SIG) to develop specification enhancements for energy application utilizing CIP. The group will focus on developing energy parameters, objects and services for energy optimization. Initial enhancements of the specifications are expected to be available in 2012.
The ODVA initiative is in line with other activities around industry that are aimed at energy optimization. PI (Profibus & Profinet International), the trade group that oversees the Profibus and Profinet networking standards, for example, has developed an energy-saving profile based on Profinet that is known as Profienergy.
