ISA-95 Resources

May 6, 2013
Having been around for a number of years and addressing one of the biggest headaches to confront manufacturers, there is no shortage of information available about ISA-95. Following is a listing of a few key resources.

MESA. If ISA-95 intrigues you, membership in MESA offers you access to key players involved with the standards as well as a broad set of resources. One highlight in particular is the December 2012 MESA White Paper #41: “ISA-95 for the Continuous Process Industries” (available to members only). This white paper relates ISA-95 to other industry standards, interprets the standard for the continuous process industry, and presents five case studies.

Best practices. Charlie Gifford’s ISA-95 Best Practices Workgroup has published three books, available through ISA:

• The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Manufacturing Operations Management: ISA-95’s Best Practices Book 1.0 (2007). This resource includes how-to white papers described in the context of ISA-95 models, definitions and data exchanges. Provides coverage on applying ISA-95, including manufacturing operations management (MOM) systems and their enterprise and plant interfaces.

• When Worlds Collide in Manufacturing Operations: ISA-95’s Best Practices Book 2.0 (2011). This work contains white papers on applying ISA-95 standards to accelerate the adoption of MOM systems and the Manufacturing 2.0 Architecture approach, including strategies to combine MOM with continuous improvement. Explains how to implement ISA-95 workflow to execute facility and supply-chain activities throughout the MOM and physical process levels, streamlining operations.

• The MOM Chronicles: ISA-95 Best Practices Book 3.0 (2013). This book focuses on MOM system engineering to organize manufacturing and supply chain infrastructures. It moves beyond departmental point solutions to an overall operations process definition and points out that manufacturing innovation requires an iterative continuous improvement process through MOM systems engineering.

The view from Europe. Visit www.isa-95.com to access a practical collection of standards basics, ISA-95 advantages and downloads available with free membership. Managed by a group of mainly European end users, system integrators and suppliers, the site’s objective is to further ISA-95 adoption.

Vendor perspectives. Most ISA-95 consultants and automation equipment and systems vendors offer white papers and presentations around ISA-95 and ISA-88, which are too numerous to list individually. A good place to start, however, is with anything authored by one of the ISA-95 voting members. You can see the entire list of members at www.isa.org/MSTemplate.cfm?MicrositeID=285&CommitteeID=4747. From there, search the page for “voting."
