The Foxboro A² automation system is an expandable distributed control system (DCS) designed to provide end users in pharmaceutical, biotech and similar process plants with an automation solution that fits their applications better than programmable logic controllers and costs less than traditional DCSs.
The A² system is scalable, going from equipment-level systems with low I/O counts to larger systems that can meet the needs of a complete plant control network. “Early projects have been won on the basis that users pay for only what they need today, with the assurance that they can grow the system to thousands of points of I/O without throwing away any of their initial investment,” says Steve Young, vice president for the vendor. Prices for smaller systems start at less than $10,000.
