FZ3 Vision Sensor Uses True Color Sensing for Stable, High-Speed Inspections

Nov. 2, 2011

Omron has introduced the advanced FZ3 color vision sensor that makes it possible to automate inspection of low-contrast color objects at high speed with reliable results by using true color technology and intelligent cameras. Omron’s Advanced Real Color Sensing (ARCS) engine captures and processes 16.77 million colors, approaching human color perception, and out-performs systems that use monochrome or false-color contrast conversion and analysis methods. The FZ3 offers up to four-camera capability and true color conversion. Camera choices include two- and five-mega-pixel models to obtain high resolution images with a greater field of view. Built-in EtherNet/IP and serial interfaces simplify integration of vision inspection into production lines. The FZ3 provides remote access for diagnostics via a PC to reduce production downtime; for advanced programming, the FZ3-H series offers tools from the HALCON library developed by MVTec with their internationally adopted software.

The FZ3 controller comes built into a touch screen LCD monitor to reduce panel space, or in a conventional box-type unit. Images and tool sets are presented onscreen for easy drag-and-drop setup. Optional on-line editing functions allow changes to be made without stopping the line to minimize unnecessary rejections in production. The FZ3 simulation software allows trial measurements to be performed on a computer using prepared images. Settings, startup, and adjustments can be verified in advance without requiring the controller. Intelligent cameras with built-in lighting offer zoom capabilities with auto-focus and auto-iris to shorten production line changeover. Built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) functionality reduces image problems created by halation, poor contrast, and hot spot. The controller allows remote monitoring and control of focus, aperture, field of view, and lighting of cameras.

Applications
The color accuracy, stability, and speed of Omron’s FZ3 color vision sensor make it ideal for multi-color label inspections in high-speed food and beverage and pharmaceutical packaging, electronic parts assembly, semiconductor manufacturing, and the automotive industry.

The FZ3 does not require separate software or lengthy training to operate the color vision system proficiently. Controllers with LCD monitor built in and box-style controllers can be used with Omron’s wide range of 20 cameras.
