Some machine tool builders (MTBs) are unable to support their control systems due to such factors as obsolete parts, which can leave machine shops looking for alternative solutions to keep the systems running, or else requiring them to scrap the machines altogether.
Some machine tool builders (MTBs) are unable to support their control systems due to such factors as obsolete parts, which can leave machine shops looking for alternative solutions to keep the systems running, or else requiring them to scrap the machines altogether.  In response, Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc. has developed a retrofit package to replace such control systems currently using MELDASMAGIC 64 controls. The retrofit can be used in any machine that runs on a MAGIC64 based system, including horizontal and vertical lathes, vertical milling machines and bridge mills.
“This retrofit is a main control system which is designed to replace an MTB’s existing industrial personal computer (IPC) running on a Windows 95 or Windows NT platform,” said Russ Pobutkiewicz, technical service & support project manager, Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc. “It is a Mitsubishi Electric product fully supported by Mitsubishi Electric Automation, so customers have peace of mind knowing that the new control system is backed by a company with a solid reputation for quality and support.”
The retrofit package consists of an M65S control unit, LCD, keypad, and two power supplies, all mounted to a frame which bolts into the space of the existing control system. Mitsubishi Electric Automation also supplies all necessary communication and power cabling.
The new and more advanced control system is fully compatible with existing hardware (servo and spindle systems, and machine I/O’s). It provides increased capabilities and functionality, with more than 60 options included as standard, some of which were not available on the MAGIC64.  It also provides quicker boot up times and improved reliability.
Mitsubishi Electric Automation will program the retrofit assembly once it receives the original parameter and ladder files from the local dealer. Once it is programmed, all necessary materials will be shipped to the dealer or end user for quick and seamless installation.
