High performance molded plastic (HPP) components for motor vehicles greatly improve performance with critical sealing and high wear resistance.

High performance molded plastic (HPP) components for motor vehicles greatly improve performance with critical sealing and high wear resistance. Motor vehicle designers of assemblies such as Floating Pistons for shock absorbers benefit from Minnesota Rubber and Plastics (MR&P) design experience and molding capabilities.

For a custom molded 1-3/4 inch diameter Floating Piston, a proprietary MR&P Quad Ring seal is designed to fit securely inside the shock absorber bore. Molded of a HPP resin material, the seal slides up and down smoothly and efficiently when in operation. It separates the gas-charged portion of the bore from the oil preventing leakage.

“These floating pistons are molded of a glass filled, specially formulated, heat stabilized Nylon compound,” reports Aron Yngve Marketing Director of Minnesota Rubber and Plastics. “To prevent leakage and to hold the Quad-Ring seal securely in position, the piston body is designed with a 1/8 inch groove so that no twisting of the seal occurs during operation. The Quad-Ring seal is precision molded from a specially formulated HNBR elastomer to achieve the required high concentricity, low friction, and long operating life.”

To assemble these Floating Pistons precisely, Minnesota Rubber and Plastics utilizes a high-speed automated system to move the injection molded pistons into position for assembly with the Quad-Ring seals. A small amount of silicone lubricant is automatically applied to the seal while it moves through the high-speed automated system. Once assembly is complete, the system’s vision system inspects for quality, which ensures that seals are positioned correctly within piston slots. The automated system has the capacity to operate 24/7 with output in the millions per year.

Minnesota Rubber and Plastics is a world leader for over 65 years supplying the vehicle industry with quality products like these Floating Pistons. The company excels in engineering design, compound development, and manufacturing of custom molded elastomeric and thermoplastic components and assemblies.

Minnesota Rubber and Plastics’ corporate-wide quality systems include: ISO 13485, ISO-TS 16949, and ISO 9000 in all facilities. These facilities operate under a corporate-wide Environmental Management System registered to the International Standards Organization series ISO-14001.
