NUMERIK JENA, known for high quality smaller package-size linear and rotary encoders, has now developed two families of absolute linear encoders to fit into tight spaces. Called the LAK and KIT LA, these non-contact encoders offer several types of electrical interfaces, including EnDat 2.2 with analog signals, a key market request. This interface allows motion stage manufacturers to use the absolute position values and the analog position values for different purposes.

Available in North America through HEIDENHAIN CORPORATION, these NUMERIK JENA absolute linear encoders can serve many precision measurement feedback applications in the semiconductor, medical, automation and metrology industries.

The new LAK scanning units have a shielded housing whereas the KIT LA scanning units are a sensor with an optional frame, both of which have two scanning fields for superior contamination resistance. The Endat 2.2 versions are capable of resolving down to 10 nanometers resolution at a velocity of 10 meters per second. Other available interfaces include BISS C, SSI, and a HIPERFACE-compatible option.

The steel scale substrate in the encoders comes in the industry- accepted Singleflex or Doubleflex mounting options at up to a measuring length of 1.2 meters. On each scale, there are two Periodic Random Code (PRC) tracks that are inverted with respect to each other and are arranged in parallel to a centered incremental track with a 20-micron grating period. The two PRC tracks allow the scanning unit to measure the yaw angle, which is helpful for some processes. The scales are sold at an accuracy class of +/- 3microns per meter.

The encoder systems are installed via USB with the Absoflex diagnosis software.
