Transforming Industrial Automation

Nexans Industrial Solutions announces that its Industrial Ethernet line of bulk copper cable and cordsets have achieved compliance with key industrial Ethernet protocols – ODVA’s EtherNet/IP™, PROFINET and CC-Link IE.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the convergence of the factory into the enterprise networks are accelerating the migration from legacy fieldbus networks to the modern Industrial Ethernet, which is becoming the network of choice in manufacturing for its simplicity, scalability, diagnostic capabilities and high performance. These three leading Industrial Ethernet protocols, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET and CC-LINK IE promoted by Rockwell Automation, Siemens and Mitsubishi’s automation systems respectively, are leading this network convergence. Compliance with these protocols confirms that Nexans’ solutions meet or exceed performance requirements. In addition to superior data transmission capabilities, their industrial-optimized attributes include high-flex capability tested to 35 million cycles, 600V AWM UL rating, chemical resistance, ingress protection to IP-67 performance, and superior shielding effectiveness with protection against EM/RF interference in noisy industrial environments.

ODVA is a global association whose members include the world’s leading automation companies. EtherNet/IP™, the leading Industrial Ethernet technology at ODVA, utilizes the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP™) for its upper layers. CIP Networks follow the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, which defines a framework for implementing network protocols in seven layers: physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation and application.

PROFINET is an industry technical standard for data communication over Industrial Ethernet. It is designed for collecting data and controlling equipment in industrial systems, especially with transmitting data under tight time constraints. Some of the benefits of PROFINET over legacy PROFIBUS include faster and more flexible communication, 1 Gbps or 100 Mbps vs. 12 Mbps, open and scalable Ethernet protocol vs. the old RS-485, more addressable devices and axes of motion, and easier connectivity.

Nexans’ CC-Link IE Field-certified Industrial Ethernet products include bulk cable as well as RJ45 cordsets. CLPA is an international open network organization dedicated to the technical development and promotion of the CC-Link family of open automation networks. The CLPA's key technology is CC-Link IE, the world's first and only open gigabit Ethernet for automation and an ideal solution for Industry 4.0 applications due to its unmatched bandwidth.
