Red Lion Increases Staff

June 3, 2011
“While many companies have chosen to delay or eliminate investments in technology and headcount, we have done the opposite,” said Mike Granby, president of Red Lion Controls Inc. (www.redlion.net). Red Lion is a York, Pa. maker of operator interface panels, process controllers and other automation interface devices.

Granby told Automation World that Red Lion “had a very good year last year, and this year it seems to be continuing. HMI prods are selling very strongly” and that is fueling his ability to expand. Red Lion has added 41 employees so far this year, in departments ranging from direct manufacturing to customer service. “We doubled the size of the support department. We’ve also added four more software engineers, because there’s more need for software as products get more complicated,” he explained.

What he doesn’t want, said Granby, “is customers listening to hold music. We make products here in the U.S. and we support them here. We think people need and expect a high level of customer service from that.”

In late 2010, Red Lion’s parent company, United Kingdom-based instrumentation and controls company Spectris plc (www.spectris.com), announced it had completed the acquisition of N-Tron Corp. (www.n-tron.com), Mobile, Ala.-based manufacturer of rugged industrial networking components. Granby said the additional people means the two companies’ total number of U.S. employees is now 260.
