Emerson Extends Power Portfolio with TCSA Acquisition

Turbine Control Service Associates, now part of Emerson Process Management, replaces aging power plant controls with systems based on newer technology.

Emerson Electric Co. (www.emerson.com), St. Louis, announced on Jan. 25 that it has acquired Pittsburgh-based Turbine Control Service Associates Inc. (TCSA, www.tcsainc.com), an independent provider of generator excitation control systems for power plants. The acquisition expands the breadth and depth of Emerson Process Management’s product portfolio for the global power generation market, the company said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Turbine Control Service Associates helps power plant operators improve generator performance and reliability by replacing aging controls with systems that take advantage of newer technology. The company’s Digital Generator Controller system currently controls generation of thousands of megawatts at nuclear, fossil and hydroelectric power plants.

Growth opportunities

Founded in 1993, Turbine Control Service Associates’ generator excitation systems control a wide range of generators driven by large and small steam turbines, combustion turbines, and hydroelectric turbines. The company has offices in Pittsburgh and San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Emerson Process Management is an automation and control system supplier for the global power generation industry. Power plants using Emerson’s control technology represent approximately 725 gigawatts of the world’s total generating capacity, according to the company.
