Turbine Control Service Associates, now part of Emerson Process Management, replaces aging power plant controls with systems based on newer technology.

Emerson Electric Co. (www.emerson.com), St. Louis, announced on Jan. 25 that it has acquired Pittsburgh-based Turbine Control Service Associates Inc. (TCSA, www.tcsainc.com), an independent provider of generator excitation control systems for power plants. The acquisition expands the breadth and depth of Emerson Process Management’s product portfolio for the global power generation market, the company said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Turbine Control Service Associates helps power plant operators improve generator performance and reliability by replacing aging controls with systems that take advantage of newer technology. The company’s Digital Generator Controller system currently controls generation of thousands of megawatts at nuclear, fossil and hydroelectric power plants.

“Our organizations share a common vision and passion for providing world-class turbine-generator control solutions to the power generation industry,” said Steve Sonnenberg, president, Emerson Process Management (www.emersonprocess.com), the Austin, Texas-based Emerson business that is a major process automation supplier. “While this acquisition further strengthens Emerson’s leadership position in automating power generation facilities, the real winners are our respective customers, who will benefit from our expanded portfolio of innovative technologies and industry-specific expertise.”

Growth opportunities

“This is an excellent fit for us,” said Tom Kallay, Turbine Control Service Associates president. “Our company is well-regarded for our strong focus on dependable performance, quality products and responsive customer service—all hallmarks of Emerson, as well. We look forward to new growth opportunities as we leverage Emerson’s global project, marketing and technology resources.”

Founded in 1993, Turbine Control Service Associates’ generator excitation systems control a wide range of generators driven by large and small steam turbines, combustion turbines, and hydroelectric turbines. The company has offices in Pittsburgh and San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Emerson Process Management is an automation and control system supplier for the global power generation industry. Power plants using Emerson’s control technology represent approximately 725 gigawatts of the world’s total generating capacity, according to the company.
