Design and Build a Working Control System

Students can win a trip to Germany courtesy of Phoenix Contact.

The company is sponsoring its fourth annual Nanoline® Contest.

The contest challenges students in middle school, high school and technical school to design an original control system using Phoenix Contact's Nanoline controller. The winning team receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the Hanover Fair in Germany next spring. They will present their project in TectoYou, a special hall at the Hanover Fair dedicated to promoting science and technology careers to young people.

Phoenix Contact will hold an informational seminar for interested teachers at its U.S. headquarters in Middletown, Pa., at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 1. Teachers outside of Central Pennsylvania can attend via a live WebEx. Judging will take place in February, when at least one representative of each participating team must present the project in person.

Nanoline is an intelligent and compact controller that automates basic tasks. It is programmed with the intuitive nanoNavigator software, so no previous programming experience is necessary. Phoenix Contact supplies the participating teams with the Nanoline controller, nanoNavigator software and technical support.

"In previous years, the project had to fit into one of several specific categories, but this year, we've eliminated the categories. There are no limits, so be creative and have fun," said Jack Nehlig, president of Phoenix Contact USA. "We designed this contest to promote math and science education, but the participants get much more out of it. It teaches teamwork, presentation skills, creative problem-solving and much more. And the winning team gets a bonus lesson in European culture as well."
