Sandvik Coromant Embraces National Manufacturing Day

Sept. 25, 2012
Open doors throughout October aim to reshape long-held misconceptions about Manufacturing.

Sandvik Coromant, the world's leading producer of cutting tools for the metal cutting industry, is pleased to announce its support and participation in the second annual Manufacturing Day, to be observed nationally on Oct. 5, 2012. The company will have its Productivity Centers in the U.S. participating in the national event and continue with activities throughout the month of October.

Manufacturing Day is sponsored by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), the U.S. Commerce Department's Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and The Manufacturing Institute and supported by dozens of other national and regional manufacturing organizations.

Studies by the nonprofit Manufacturing Institute and others show that almost 80 percent of Americans believe manufacturing is important to our economic prosperity, standard of living and national security. Yet only 30 percent would encourage their children to go into manufacturing as a career.

With the gap growing each year between the skills students learn in school and those they will need on the job, it is increasingly difficult for manufacturers to find and hire qualified employees. By promoting Manufacturing Day, Sandvik Coromant aims to address some of the myths preventing students from pursing manufacturing as a career.

"The biggest obstacle to the future of manufacturing in the U.S. is a simple matter of perception," said Jamie Price, president, Sandvik Coromant U.S. "By opening our doors to show people what modern manufacturing really is, we can help erode those outdated misconceptions."
