Integrated Control and Safety Systems Support Petrochemical Plant Expansion

March 12, 2013
Main automation contractor Honeywell has been awarded four contracts worth $40 million for Abu Dhabi Polymer Company's Borouge 3 complex.

Honeywell  announced in January that it has been awarded four major contracts worth a combined $40 million over an18-month duration for the Abu Dhabi Polymer Company’s  Borouge 3 petrochemicals complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. Honeywell will be the main automation contractor (MAC) for this project, providing Linde and other engineering, procurement and construction (EPCs) contractors involved in the project with integrated control and safety systems.

The installation of Honeywell Process Solutions’(HPS ) control and safety systems, Experion Process Knowledge System C300, Safety Manager, and Advanced Process Control will allow for operational integration, improved production, increased safety and reliability, and maximum operability and  profitability. The Real Time Information Management System will provide Borouge 3 with business solutions that streamline, centralize and optimize operations, allowing for further profitability and productivity.

Borouge 3 is an expansion of Abu Dhabi Polymer Company’s Borouge project and will manufacture ethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, and low-density polyethylene (LDPE), alongside associated butane, utilities and offsite facilities. Honeywell’s technologies have previously been implemented in the Borouge 1 project in 1999 and the Borouge 2 project in 2010, and will continue to help Borouge meet its strategic goal of expanding the production capacity of the plant, making it the largest integrated polyolefins site in the world.

“The expansion of Borouge is a significant step forward, both for the company and for the industry. We are looking to boost our production of polyoleofins and add approximately 2.5 million tons per year of capacity. It is very important for us to work with the right technology partners, who understand our need for continuously efficient operations,” said Abdulla Ateya, senior vice president, Technical, Abu Dhabi Polymer Company, Borouge project. “We chose Honeywell because we found them to have the most comprehensive portfolio of process control solutions available today. The local access to experts in the field proved to be an added advantage.”

According to Orhan Genis, vice president of sales, EMEA, Honeywell Process Solutions, “With the Gulf region’s share in the global petrochemical market expected to grow to 20 percent by 2015, there is also a corresponding need for reliable, cost-effective processes. Solutions such as those selected for Borouge 3 can ensure that operational efficiencies are an integral part of the growth process.”
