Business technology solutions specialists Amor Energy, a Lockheed Martin company, has strengthened its links with academia in Aberdeen with the secondment of Dr. Laura Muir from Robert Gordon University (RGU) to the role of Information Management (IM) consultant.
Dr Muir is a senior lecturer in the Department of Information Management at RGU and joins Amor on secondment for an initial one year period. The move follows the success of a two year partnership between Amor Energy and the Department of Information Management of RGU’s Aberdeen Business School, which was part-funded by the Technology Strategy Board. The partnership included the development of a benchmarking tool for oil and gas information management and a professional development short course for document controllers in the sector.
RGU’s Document Control Foundation short-course was launched in partnership with Amor in May 2012. Since then, over 260 students from around the world have successfully completed the course by distance learning and gained a Professional Development certificate of award of five credits at SCQF level 9.
Dr Muir said: “RGU and Amor are delighted with the success of the Document Control course so far. It has provided a much needed opportunity for professional development in this field with the added value of university accreditation. The course was originally designed for new entrants to the document control function in the oil and gas sector but it has also proven very popular with senior staff seeking certification in their discipline and from students who wish to enter this area of work.
“I welcomed the opportunity to take up a secondment with Amor and have dedicated time away from the university to focus on looking at better ways industry and academia can work together in the IM discipline and bring a different perspective to the company’s IM services.
Neale Stidolph, head of information management at Amor Group, said: “As the value proposition of engineering information management, data and document control continues to grow, Dr Muir will bring with her a huge amount of valuable knowledge, experience and insight to our IM team.
“Information management is a fast-growing discipline requiring greater service and process maturity, Dr Muir will be an invaluable asset to the team.”
Dr Muir, who has been with RGU for 12 years added: “As well as contributing to Amor I intend to learn from the experience and take back valuable industry knowledge to RGU. There will be long-term benefits to both Amor and the university. Building bridges between academia and industry is hugely important in order to improve opportunities for applied research and develop new opportunities for industry-focussed skills and training and I anticipate that my time here will help achieve this.”
Dr Muir has domain knowledge in Information Management gained in an academic environment and applied in research and consultancy projects with industry partners. Her research, communication and project management skills will be applied in a number of areas including: analysing Information Management services in client organisations (Current State Assessments), developing oil and gas IM competency frameworks and education/ training programmes; and creating IM governance standards for service delivery.
Earlier this year Amor strengthened its IM workforce with four new consultancy appointments as it prepared for growth in demand for its services in information management.
