Schneider Electric Recognizes SimSci 50th Anniversary

Jan. 20, 2017
SimSci has delivered excellence in process design, simulation and optimization for the petroleum, chemical and mining industries for 50 years Innovation continues with new SimCentral and cloud-based offerings

Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, today recognized the 50th anniversary of SimSci, a solution first launched January 20 1967. Since then, SimSci has established a rich history of customer satisfaction and process design excellence – a tradition that continues today. SimSci process simulation solutions serve 23 of the world’s top 25 petroleum companies; 48 of the top 50 chemical companies; and all of the top mining companies.

“Having been part of the SimSci team for 10 years, I have witnessed an extraordinary level of accomplishment by our customers to drive continuous innovation and engineering excellence,” said Dr. Tobias Scheele, Senior Vice President Software, Global Solutions at Schneider Electric. “At Schneider Electric Software, our continued focus is to empower our customers to achieve and sustain process engineering and operational excellence that delivers exceptional value to their business. We look forward to the next 50 years where we can build upon a rich history of innovation to help our customers further drive innovation through a new era of cloud, mobility and Industrial IoT-based solutions.”

50 Years of SimSci

The business started when founders Dr. Y. L. Wang and A. Paul Oleson developed a distillation simulation program with functionality not commercially available in the late 1960s. The first programs quickly became widely accepted for design in the hydrocarbon processing industries. As increased simulation capabilities were added, SimSci soon became the industry benchmark – a position that continues through today.

During the 1980’s and thereafter, new dynamic process modeling and simulation capabilities were added to the portfolio – establishing a framework of continued innovation and industry leadership. Acquisitions added further solution capabilities while increasing market share in the process industries. Most recently, SimSci joined the family of Schneider Electric solutions with the acquisition of Invensys plc in 2014.

The Future of Process Engineering

Schneider Electric continues to invest in Cloud, Mobility and Industrial IoT technologies to drive innovation in how processes are simulated, engineered and executed. Schneider Electric Software recently announced the industry’s first cloud-based offering (see announcement) and a next-generation simulation solution that will initially serve the Process Utilities industry before expanding to the rest of the process industries. SimCentral is redefining how engineering processes can be designed, optimized and shared across departments, regions and companies (see announcement). Schneider Electric continues to invest in solutions that help customers achieve success by empowering them to digitize their plant with process simulation models. Benefits include improved throughput and effective control costs throughout the entire plant lifecycle, from design to operation and optimization.

Customer satisfaction with Schneider Electric process engineering and simulation solutions has consistently remained high, as reported by TechValidate:

· 97% of surveyed SimSci customers improved their designs with SimSci Design software (source)

· 72% of surveyed SimSci customers improved process designs with SimSci design software from Schneider Electric (source)

· 364 SimSci customers rated Schneider Electric SimSci Technical Support as 4 out of 5 stars (source)
