At NIWeek 2013, we revealed that we were developing roboRIO, a controller designed specifically for student robotics. We also announced that all teams would receive one free roboRIO for the 2015 season of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).
We’re excited to share that roboRIO is now available and being shipped to FRC teams! This controller, designed specifically for student robotics, extends the long-standing partnership between NI and FIRST for another five years, and puts a smaller, faster, and more powerful controller in the hands of students.
Why are we so excited about roboRIO?
- Students are working with the same technology that engineers use. The roboRIO controller is built on the LabVIEW reconfigurable I/O (RIO) architecture, giving students access to the same technology used by engineers in applications such as space travel, renewable energy, and cancer treatment.
- New upgrades will help students design complex systems faster than ever. A more powerful processor, a custom electronics port, and reduction in size and cost are only a few of the significant changes made to roboRIO. It also comes with a smaller footprint, improvements to the USB device port, and the ability to run embedded Linux with real-time extensions.
- This technology builds on what students already know, helping them to evolve their knowledge. With roboRIO and LabVIEW, students can build on the technology from previous competitions to create a technology continuum, exposing them to one technology platform over the course of their participation in the FIRST organization.
