USB Connector for Harsh Environments

Jan. 31, 2011
CONEC, a manufacturer of high-quality connectors, has expanded its bayonet locking and water-resistant series of connectors with a USB connector compliant with USB2.0 specifications.

The new USB connector provides design engineers a highly reliable option for the harshest environments. This connector is part of CONEC’s expansive IP67-rated family widely used in industrial production, food/beverage, chemical controllers process, outdoor wireless, Bluetooth adapters, diagnostic and test instruments, oil/gas and factory automation applications.

"The expansion of the USB marketplace and continued growth has significantly impacted the packaging and interfaces of USB connectors," said Peter Persico, technical support specialist at CONEC. "In order to address the harsh environment industry, CONEC expanded its IP67 family to include USB connectors that are robust enough to withstand the most extreme environments."

CONEC’s water-resistant USB products feature robust internal components housed in black plastic and nickel-plated zinc die-cast with a bayonet locking termination rated to IEC 61076-3-106 specifications. The interface meets IP67 requirements when a mating connector is inserted or when covered with a secured protective cap. A USB 2.0 plug set is available for the cable side and there are also preassembled patch cords available in various IP protection designs and lengths.

The USB connector contacts are phosphor bronze and gold-plated with a contact resistance rated at a maximum 30mÙ and insulation resistance of 500mÙ. Current ratings are 1.5A maximum at 25°C, and operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C.

The product line includes a variety of panel-mounted receptacles, mating plugs, protective caps, and pre-terminated jumper cables, including jackets suitable for outdoor use.

The IP67 USB connectors ensure a continuously secure dust and weatherproof connection in addition to being sealed for a watertight connection.
