Two new versions of the vendor’s programmable automation controllers (PACs), now called the SNAP PAC family, are available. The SNAP PAC-S series is a high performance standalone controller suitable for distributed control systems and applications with I/O point counts above 128 points or complex Ethernet network architectures.

The SNAP-PAC-S1 model features a 32-bit multitasking processor with floating point unit, 32MB of RAM, 16MB of flash memory, 8MB of battery backed RAM, one RS-485 port and two RS-232 ports. The SNAP-PAC-S1 offers two auto-negotiating 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports that—when used with the vendor’s ioProject Professional software—can be configured to create dual Ethernet networks or to create a redundant network for critical applications. The SNAP PAC-R series is an “on-the-I/O-rack” controller designed for cell control and smaller point count applications where I/O needs are geographically contained. The SNAP-PAC-R1 model, when combined with an SNAP-B8M 8-module I/O rack, provides an under-$1,000 control and data acquisition hardware and software solution capable of addressing up to 256 local I/O. The SNAP PAC-R also features dual auto-negotiating 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports that can be used for sub-networking or redundancy, and allows the PAC-R controller to scale up to larger systems, or be a member in a PAC-S distributed system. Both new processors are designed for use with the latest release of ioProject, an integrated suite of applications, programming tools and utilities. The SNAP PAC-R1 ships with ioProject Basic at no charge. The SNAP-PAC-S1 is designed for use with ioProject Professional, an expanded feature set version that includes an OPC server, Microsoft SQL Server connectivity and the vendor’s FactoryFloor input facility.
