PLC Functionality in PC

Jan. 18, 2010
Continuing an evolution of PLC (programmable logic controller) functions into open PC-based systems, this controller adds PC and PCI-104 modules for open interfaces.

Siemens Industry Inc. has enhanced its S7-mEC modular Embedded Controller system with new expansion modules for additional hardware interfaces and a new controller with an integrated HMI. The system merges the design concept of the Simatic S7-300 controller family with the power of Microsoft Windows embedded. Users benefit from the rugged design of the S7 built-in backplane and I/O modules combined with the power of an open system PC-based platform for advanced data handling and custom algorithms.

The new expansion modules, the EM PC and the EM PCI-104 expand the number of available PC-specific interfaces to the system. By adding open interfaces such as USB, serial, Gigabit Ethernet, DVI-I monitor port and PCI-104 to this system, it is now possible to apply this embedded architecture to any PC-based automation application.

Complimenting the S7-mEC family, the new EC31-HMI/RTX controller adds HMI functionality. With the new controller, the Intel Core 2 Duo microprocessor can be used for control and visualization tasks. With WinAC RTX 2008 and WinCC Flexible 2008 pre-installed on the system, the user can set up a complete control solution on one piece of hardware that requires minimal configuration or installation.

After its recent reorganization, Siemens Industry Inc. (SII) is the U.S. affiliate of Siemens' global Industry Sector business. The Industry Automation (IA) Division of SII is a global supplier of automation systems, low-voltage switchgear and industrial software.
