When compared to traditional optocouplers, the certified digital isolators simplify circuits by reducing required PCB board space along with component cost and design complexity as multiple diodes and resistors are no longer needed. The isolators also provide higher data rates for more efficient operation and reduce installation cost over other protection methods. Additionally, they are ultra-low power, limiting the amount of energy required to isolate in hazardous areas. The ENX signals can be used to disable the internal refresh, which lowers the total quiescent current to less than 1 µA. Despite the low power consumption, all models provide low, pulse width distortion <8 ns. In addition, every model has an input glitch filter to protect against extraneous noise disturbances. The quad digital isolation devices are available in a small 16-lead QSOP (2.5 kV) and 20-lead SSOP (3.75 kV) packages. Suggested applications include general-purpose, low power multichannel isolation, 1 MHz, low power peripheral interface (SPI) and 4 to 20 mA process control loops.
