ORBIS Corporation, an international manufacturer of sustainable reusable packaging and an expert in supply chain optimization, has introduced fabric dunnage, a combination of ergonomically-friendly dunnage materials designed to be a uniquely flexible and customizable solution for the most challenging packaging requirements. This follows the recent re-branding of the company’s entire line of protective dunnage as ORBIShield.

Fabric has been an increasingly popular dunnage choice among assembly manufacturers in recent years. Its ability to protect parts of various sizes, complex geometry, and Class-A surfaces provides a favorable alternative for companies in need of shipping a large, and often ever-changing, variety of components. In certain applications, fabric dunnage is the best option for custom protective interior dunnage. In recognition of this need, ORBIS now manufactures a full line of fabric dunnage.

Because of ORBIShield fabric dunnage’s inherent flexible properties, customers will experience increased versatility and reusability. Whereas typical rigid foam and divider sets are usually designed to fit a specific part perfectly for the duration of its life, fabric dunnage has sewn cells and pockets that can be used for an array of different parts with different specifications – allowing the fabric to be used to fit a range of parts, repeatedly, over the life of the dunnage.

This dunnage is industrially sewn, in all types of materials, with a variety of features to meet the protection requirements, from double seams to reinforced bottoms. It can be designed for a variety of containers, from small hand-held totes to bulk collapsible containers to side-loading Maximus containers to metal racks.

In addition to its Mentor, Ohio plant, ORBIS’ newest facility in Silao, Gto., Mexico, has full fabric dunnage capabilities with a staff of designers, prototyping equipment, product testing areas and state-of-the-art machinery to fabricate all types of fabric dunnage solutions. This plant is centrally located in Mexico to serve OEMs and Tier 1 automotive suppliers throughout Latin America.

“ORBIS is the industry’s most comprehensive single-source provider for entire systems of containers, pallets, bulk containers, and protective dunnage,” said Adam Glorioso, product manager for dunnage, ORBIS Corporation. “As North America’s leader in plastic reusable packaging for the automotive industry, it is crucial we provide our customers with innovative solutions that meet the demands of a wide array of shipping scenarios. With the launch of our comprehensive fabric dunnage line, ORBIS will continue to serve our industrial partners with best-in-class solutions to fit even the most difficult packaging requirements.”

The new fabric dunnage capabilities will round out the company’s popular ORBIShield dunnage line. Other offerings include custom die-cut plastic corrugated divider sets, saw-cut foam inserts, sealed-edge divider sets, pigeon hole dunnage, custom thermoformed trays, sewn fabric bags, foam rails and molded foam inserts.

With more than 25 years serving the automotive industry with vehicle launches, and with manufacturing plants in the U.S., Mexico, China and Europe, leading automotive OEMs and suppliers have come to rely on ORBIS to provide the most diverse packaging solutions and versatile materials available in the marketplace. ORBIShield fabric dunnage provides these customers with an innovative solution to move product faster, safer, and more cost-effectively within their supply chains, while helping reduce overall impact on the environment.

Additional benefits include:

  • Fabric can be used in combination with rigid materials to create unique packaging solutions
  • Easily accommodates part nesting for improved pack density
  • Fabric is removable for container cleaning at the start of a new shipment
  • Versatility allows different parts to be used in same configuration
  • Less susceptible to design revisions due to part geometry changes
  • Improved workplace safety and functionality with ergonomically-friendly materials for easy handling
