SEL expands recloser control offerings

Nov. 28, 2016
The newly added SEL-651RA provides powerful, cost-effective and flexible control for 14-pin recloser applications.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) expanded its recloser control family with the SEL-651RA. Designed for distribution automation (DA) systems, the new Recloser Control provides advanced protection and communications for 14-pin reclosers at an economical price point.

“Many of today’s recloser applications require advanced protection functions and Ethernet communications protocols,” said SEL R&D Product Manager Craig Thompson. “The SEL-651RA is a cost-effective, full-featured solution that addresses growing demand for comprehensive protection and communications capabilities.”

The SEL-651RA Recloser Control offers second-harmonic blocking, rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) elements, synchrophasor measurements, and optional high-impedance fault detection, using SEL’s patented arc-sense technology (AST). It also includes 128-samples-per-cycle event reporting for more detailed event analysis.

Customers can easily integrate the SEL-651RA into Ethernet or serial-based communications networks using standard DNP3 and Modbus or optional IEC 61850 protocols. The SEL-651RA comes standard with three independent EIA-232 serial ports, one USB port, and one copper Ethernet port. Several options for the Ethernet port are available, including single fiber, dual-redundant fiber, and dual-redundant copper. There is also an option for an EIA-485 port.

Six voltage inputs make the SEL-651RA ideal for automatic network reconfiguration schemes. Added flexibility allows users to easily change phase designation for voltage and currents, do phase rolling and set CT phase polarity.

The same EZ settings that are available in the SEL-351R Recloser Control are also available in the
SEL-651RA. EZ settings provide a simple user interface that works well for many basic applications. For more advanced schemes, customers can easily access the settings with template storage.

The SEL-651RA comes installed in corrosion-resistant, IP45-rated painted aluminum cabinet and supports Low-Energy Analog (LEA) input options. LEA inputs reduce costs and save space by using sensors integrated in the recloser instead of traditional external PTs.

Designed and tested to exceed requirements specified in the IEC 62271-111/IEEE C37.60 standard, the SEL-651RA is compatible with the Cooper NOVA™ (auxiliary power), CXE, RE, RVE, RXE, VSA, VSO, VWE, VWVE 27, VWVE 38X, WE, WVE 27, WVE 38X and the G&W Viper®-S and Viper-G.
