Invensys Operations Management: Model-Adaptive Combustion Optimization System

Jan. 21, 2012
Updated software solution reduces power-plant emissions and facilitates compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Cross State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR).

Based on the company’s SimSci-Esscor Connoisseur advanced process control (APC) software, the updated, model-adaptive Combustion Optimization System reduces the need for costly pollution-control hardware by providing neural-net-based extensions to combustion management. While power producers can install or expand the use of pollution-reducing equipment, such as scrubbers or selective catalytic reduction systems, this software can be a more cost-effective alternative for compliance. The system has delivered a 10 to 25 percent reduction in NOx emissions while improving heat rate, lowering ash carbon content and producing cleaner boiler tubes, according to the company.
