ABB Robotics Launches Blueprint For Physical AI Education At NVIDIA GTC Berlin

The company unveiled a physical AI education initiative that aims to combine training, certification, and research to help close the industrial AI skills gap.

Key Highlights

  • The company announced a co-developed education program to focus on talent readiness for industrial-grade physical AI.
  • ABB and NVIDIA will collaborate on an official learning program to build the skills needed for physical AI.
  • A new supporting white paper found 84% of companies have not redesigned jobs around AI capabilities, and identifies the capabilities and approach required to close the gap.

ABB Robotics has developed an education program powered by NVIDIA AI technologies focused on physical AI, to promote talent readiness for the future of AI in industry.

“Artificial intelligence is moving beyond digital environments and into robotics and the physical systems that make, inspect, move, assemble, and maintain industry,” said Marc Segura, the president of ABB Robotics. “Physical AI is reshaping the skills needed in industrial environments. As we prepare for the use of these industrial-grade intelligent systems at scale, talent readiness is a key part of deployment readiness. Only with the right skills in place can the full potential of Autonomous Versatile Robotics (AVRTM) be achieved.”

In the published white paper supporting the launch of the program, research from ABB Robotics and NVIDIA highlighted that while 53% of companies are building AI fluency, 84% have not redesigned jobs around AI capabilities. The paper identifies the capabilities and learning approaches required and argues that academic institutions, employers, technology organizations, and industry bodies need to work in one connected system to provide the necessary educational framework for physical AI.

ABB Robotics and NVIDIA will collaborate on an official learning program to build the skills needed for physical AI, to help translate capability needs into learning opportunities for the next generation of robotics and automation talent. It will include hands-on learning with ABB RobotStudio and NVIDIA Omniverse, and will provide a certificate in robotics, simulation and physical AI, on completion, according to ABB.

The white paper, developed with contributions from Amazon Web Services, AsiaInfo, Deloitte and SKAI Intelligence, combines perspectives from manufacturing, robotics, cloud and AI infrastructure, higher education, professional learning and industry research. Its core message is that industrial physical AI will not scale through technology investment alone, but when people can translate potential into continuously improving production systems, ABB said.

ABB Robotics and NVIDIA are further exploring how these capabilities can be developed through a physical AI education solution that connects practical learning simulation, AI development and robotics, which can be seen at NVIDIA GTC in Berlin, according to the companies.
