October 2026 Product Roundup: Network Optimization
Beckhoff EtherCAT Terminals
Beckhoff’s new ED series terminals provide a new housing format and expanded functionality to the EtherCAT I/O portfolio while retaining full compatibility with existing Beckhoff hardware. The DIN rail mounted ED series EtherCAT Terminals are characterized by tool-free installation via push-in wiring connections and additional app-based diagnostics via a scannable product data matrix. This distributed I/O system increases signal acquisition efficiency, while the flexible hardware integration options help ensure future viability and investment protection.
Real Time Automation Protocol Gateways
RTA protocol gateways bridge the IT/OT gap by making factory floor data accessible to cloud platforms like AWS IoT Core and Microsoft Azure without custom code or PLC processing overhead. Designed for digitalization, these hardware modules translate industrial protocols within the OT network and deliver a secure, curated stream of data directly to cloud brokers that feed database storage, power real-time dashboards, enable predictive maintenance and drive measurable return on investment through reduced downtime and improved product quality.
AutomationDirect Unmanaged Ethernet Switches
Stride Pro Unmanaged+ industrial Ethernet switches facilitate network optimization with features such as IGMP snooping, port monitoring and VLAN support. IGMP snooping ends network flooding by transmitting data only to the specific devices requiring it. Port mirroring captures a view of your network and sends a copy of all the traffic from a selected port to a monitor port. The monitoring feature sends an alarm signal anytime the Ethernet port connection status changes, an unauthorized device is connected, or an authorized device goes offline. Additional Gigabit speed models with up to 8 ports and new lower cost PoE+ models are now available.
Pepperl+Fuchs IO-Link Masters
ICE2 (EtherNet/IP) and ICE3 (Profinet) series IO-Link masters from Pepperl+Fuchs provide industrial IO-Link master technology supporting the industry’s leading protocols, including EtherNet/IP, Profinet and Modbus TCP in addition to the real-time fieldbus protocol. The modules come with a web-based configuration approach, eliminating the need for any additional software or a higher-level PLC. Featuring an integrated OPC-UA interface, these IO-Link masters work with both cloud-based and hybrid systems. When replacing or expanding modules, all module settings can be saved as a separate file and transferred to a new device using the module cloning function.
Bihl+Weidemann Safety Gateways
In systems with numerous modules or high current demand on an ASi circuit, classic 4A gateways are not always sufficiently rated for such applications. To address this, Bihl+Wiedemann offers three new ASi-5/ASi-3 safety gateways with an integrated safety monitor and 8A per ASi circuit. With these 2-circuit gateways, large-scale installations with many nodes and high current consumption can be implemented reliably while maintaining simple integration into existing control architectures. Models include BWU4845, a Profinet gateway; BWU4851, a Profisafe via Profinet gateway; and BWU4244, an EtherNet/IP + Modbus TCP gateway. All three gateways offer 2 ASi-5/ASi-3 masters for high-performance applications and six local safe inputs and outputs.
Emerson Anti-Coating Sensor
The Rosemount 396A Anti-Coating Sensor is a digital drop-in replacement for legacy Rosemount 396P and 396PVP anti-coating sensors. It measures pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in dirty, abrasive and high-solids applications. The device includes an anti-coating reference design and holds IP67 and IP68 ratings, protecting against dust ingress as well as water ingress, including submersion. A Modbus digital output minimizes the need for sensor maintenance and ensures pH/ORP signal even when the sensor is coated. Calibration data is stored in the sensor, allowing for bench calibration and sensor replacement without requiring field recalibration. The 396A also includes a through-wall reference junction with increased surface area at the junction for fouling applications.
